Tooth extractions and oral surgery in Royal Oak

When a tooth has to come out, we keep it quick and calm.

We do most extractions here, including wisdom teeth, even fully impacted ones, and the bone grafts that prepare a spot for an implant. You'll have your own dentist, local anesthetic, and nitrous or oral sedation if you'd like. Teeth very close to the nerve, some medical conditions, and cases that need IV sedation go to an oral surgeon we trust.

Is this for you?

  • A tooth is too broken or decayed to save
  • Wisdom teeth are coming in crooked, stuck, or getting infected
  • You need a tooth out before an implant, denture or braces
  • Bone needs to be rebuilt before an implant can go in

What happens at your visit

  1. Plan

An x-ray, and a 3D CT scan for wisdom teeth or implant sites, shows the roots and where the nerves are. You'll know what's involved before the day.

  2. Pick your comfort level

Local anesthetic is standard. Add nitrous, or oral sedation if you'd rather not be fully aware of it. With oral sedation you'll need a driver.

  3. The procedure

Most simple extractions take minutes. Surgical extractions and wisdom teeth take longer but are usually done within the hour.

  4. Recovery

You'll get written instructions and a number to call if anything worries you. Most people feel back to normal in a few days.

Cost and insurance

Insurance usually pays part of an extraction. Wisdom teeth and bone grafts vary, and we'll give you a written estimate after the scan. See financing and insurance, or our membership plan if you don't have insurance.

Common questions

Do I need to see an oral surgeon?

For most extractions, no. Teeth very close to the nerve, some medical conditions, and cases that need IV sedation go to an oral surgeon we trust, and we'll tell you if yours is one of them.

What about the gap afterward?

If it's a tooth people see or one you chew with, we'll talk about replacing it, usually with an implant. We can often place a bone graft during the extraction to get the spot ready.

How long is recovery for wisdom teeth?

Two or three days of swelling and soreness for most people, and about a week to feel completely normal. Ice, soft food and rest do most of the work. More on our wisdom teeth page.
