Teeth cleanings and checkups in Royal Oak
Thorough, gentle, and usually with the same hygienist every visit.
A cleaning and exam every six months is the cheapest dentistry there is, because it catches small problems while they're still small. At our Royal Oak office a visit takes about an hour, most insurance covers it in full, and if you don't have insurance, our membership plan includes two a year.

What happens at your visit
- Catch up
We go over your health history and ask how things have been. If something's bothering you, tell us first and we'll start there.
- X-rays, if you're due
Usually once a year. They're digital and low-dose, and they're on the screen in a few seconds, so you can see what we see.
- The cleaning
Your hygienist clears away plaque and tartar, polishes, and measures your gums. If a spot is sensitive, say so. There's numbing gel, and she can go slower.
- The exam
Dr. Ansari or Dr. Dollar checks each tooth, your gums and your bite, and does an oral cancer screening. Then you'll hear what looks good, what we'd keep an eye on, and anything that needs doing.
Cost and insurance
Most dental insurance plans cover two cleanings and exams a year at 100%. No insurance? Our membership plan includes them for one yearly fee. See financing and insurance, or our membership plan if you don't have insurance.
Common questions
How long does a cleaning take?
Plan on about an hour for a cleaning and exam. Your first visit takes a little longer because we take a full set of x-rays and do a more detailed exam.
Do I really need x-rays every time?
No. Cavities between teeth and problems under the gumline don't show up to the eye, so we usually take a couple of x-rays once a year. If you'd rather skip them at a visit, we'll talk through what that means and leave it up to you.
What if my gums are in bad shape?
If your gum pockets are deep, a regular cleaning can't reach the tartar underneath. We'd recommend a deeper cleaning called scaling and root planing, done numb, usually over two visits. Our gum disease page explains it.
